Great places to eat outside in and around Burlington, VT!
Summer has arrived in Vermont! After you do your own private happy dance and rejoice that you can leave the house without donning seven layers, it’s time to get outside and enjoy it! As all Vermonters know, summer here is brief and beautiful. One of our favorite ways to embrace the warm weather and longer days is to find a great place to eat outside in Burlington Vermont and the surrounding area!
I’ve gathered a list of places in and around Burlington, VT to sit back, relax, eat, and soak up the warm weather, with a few very kid-friendly venues thrown in there as well.
Of course, you can’t go wrong on Church Street, in Burlington. It is full of great places to eat and most of them set up plenty of outdoor tables so you can enjoy some al fresco eating! Here are a few we thought were worth mentioning:
Leunig’s Bistro and Cafe is always a winner! They serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. There is a covered outdoor seating area so you can do your people watching even if it’s drizzling. Many nights offer live music and they also have an early bird or late night dinner menu at an amazing price! If you haven’t checked out Leunig’s recently, make a point to eat at one of the oldest, continually operating restaurants in downtown Burlington.
If you’ve got children with you, a great choice is Halvorson’s Upstreet Cafe. They offer a children’s menu that goes beyond the usual chicken nuggets or mac and cheese. You can sit out front on bustling Church St. or, if you’re looking for a quieter meal, they have a wonderful outdoor patio tucked off the back. An ample all-day menu means you can stop by and enjoy great food at just about any time of day.
Ken’s Pizza and Pub is Church Street Marketplace’s oldest restaurant! Located right in the middle of the pedestrian street, it is a great place to grab a slice of pizza or two and take in all that Church St. has to offer.
If you’re looking for beautiful views and sunsets then head towards the lake and grab an outdoor seat overlooking the water!
Casual dining can be found at Burlington Bay Market and Cafe; they have ample outdoor seating on the deck with spectacular views of Lake Champlain. The atmosphere is very relaxed and kid-friendly. They also serve delicious creemees so you can top off your meal with dessert or really embrace summer and decide to have ice cream for dinner!
Shanty on the Shore also offers great outdoor seating with a view of the lake. Head over here if you’re looking for an extensive seafood menu and great atmosphere! They are open every day for lunch and dinner and offer up some great clam chowder or lobster bisque.
If you’re not up for heading into downtown Burlington, the surrounding towns have some great outdoor offerings as well:
Mexicali Grill and Cantina in Williston offers outdoor seating during the summer months. This is a fun and casual dining spot that offers nightly drink specials and a great kids’ menu. Bonus: they give you tortilla chips and direct you to the self-serve salsa bar as soon as you arrive at your table which is great if you’ve got some hungry kids with you!
If you’re looking for some beautiful scenery and a slower pace, head out to Jericho and experience Jericho Cafe & Tavern. This renovated building has a lovely wrap-around porch for diners and some beautiful views. The cafe features fresh, local food and has a great welcoming atmosphere!
You don’t have to visit a restaurant to enjoy some great eating outdoors. Two events that feature delicious food and are held outdoors take place each week during the summer in Burlington:
Summervale at the Intervale is held each Thursday night. It features lots of food choices from area vendors as well as live music and kids activities. Meet some friends, bring a blanket and enjoy great local food!
The Burlington Farmers’ Market features fresh produce from area farmers, but it is also a wonderful place to pick up some prepared food and have a picnic. There is plenty of room to spread out your blanket in the grass and sample some unique offerings. There is often live music playing and you can’t help but run in to someone you know.
What about you? Do you have any favorite places to eat outside in the summer? Wherever you go, don’t forget to enjoy this short and very sweet season in Vermont and spend as much of it outside as possible!
Thanks for stopping by!
